Criminal & Traffic Law

As part of my law practice since 1974, I have assisted people who get themselves into problems with the police.  This legal assistance is, to me, an extension of assisting people and their families.

I have tried a number of cases to juries, when necessary, and have won a number of difficult cases, including my first major felony that went to trial in Juneau County in 1975 in which I obtained the dismissal of one felony and a not guilty verdict on the other two.

I more recently represented a client who was on parole from the state of Texas.  He was charged with 2 counts of second-degree sexual assault as well as one count of false imprisonment.  After a trial to a jury, he was acquitted on all three felony charges. Conviction would have meant a lengthy stay in the Wisconsin Prison System (20 years or more) and eventual release to the state of Texas to complete his prison sentence down there. I was the only friend he had in the state of Wisconsin.

When he was found to be “not guilty” by that jury, I had the satisfaction of knowing that I’d done my job and helped save this client’s future.

It is also very important to also utilize the resources available to remove clients from the judicial system when ever possible.  It’s important to listen to the client and the needs of the client and the family. Because of the many, many ways to resolve criminal matters, it’s important to me that the fees be done on an hourly basis rather than a flat fee sufficient to cover a jury trial. Trials are very, very time consuming and are, of course, a strategy of last resort.  If there is a way to divert the client’s case from the system, I’m all for it, if diversion is appropriate for the client and the client agrees.  However, when necessary to go to trial, my clients go with someone with a record of success before juries.

There are certain criminal and traffic cases that I no longer take.  I will, however, for no fee, assist the criminal or traffic client in finding an appropriate attorney for their needs from within our community.

As with all my cases, I care about my clients and want to help my clients in the best way I know can. Sometimes that means referring the client elsewhere.

Call me at 608/251-4400 and let’s see if I can help you.
